9 THINGS WORTH KNOWING
1. DIFFERENT LENSES FOR DIFFERENT WEATHER
To see clearly in snowy terrain, it’s important to have the right lens for the occasion. The right lens can make a difference in having a good or bad day on the slopes. Here’s a quick guide for recommended lenses in different conditions:
SUNNY WEATHER
- Red Revo
- Blue Revo
- Silver Mirror
- All Black
- Photochromic
- Crystal Revo
CHANGING WEATHER
- Blue Revo
- Silver Mirror
- Pink Revo
NIGHT/BAD WEATHER
- Pink Revo
- Yellow
- Clear
2. WEATHER CONDITIONS
Snowy days have different light than sunny ones. Use a dark lens on bright days to avoid being blinded. For snow days, foggy days, overcast days, and partially cloudy days, use a high-contrast lens like yellow or pink. The right lens makes it easier to see in all weather conditions.
HIGH CONTRAST
- Pink Revo
- Yellow
MEDIUM CONTRAST
- Blue Revo
- Silver Mirror
LOW CONTRAST
- Red Revo
- All Black
- Crystal Revo
- Photochromic
3. VARYING LIGHT
Lighting can be much darker when riding among trees for exemple. If you have a dark lens for bright light, it might be too dark in a dense forest. Later in the day, areas that were in direct sunlight may be shaded. Shaded terrain has flat lighting compared to terrain in bright daylight.
4. TIME OF DAY
Midday skiing when the sun is strongest requires VLT lenses with low numbers. “Visible Light Transmission” or VLT indicates how much light the lens lets in. Riding in the evening under artificial light requires an almost clear or high VLT lens. Riding in the morning after sunrise and in the evening before sunset requires an medium number VLT lens.
VLT %
- All Black – 7.65%
- Photochromic – 7.96% / 20.66%
- Silver Mirror – 8.92%
- Red Revo – 13.43%
- Blue Revo – 20.03%
- Pink Revo – 41.37%
- Yellow – 76.21%
- Clear – 80.74%
5. WHAT IS “REVO”?
Revo is a coating applied to the outside of the lens. The term ‘revo’ usually applies when the mirror has more than one color, for example, red-orange or blue-green. While mirror coatings are often chosen for their cosmetic effect, they also reduce glare and increase filtration ability, blocking an additional 10-60% of visible light for increased comfort in intense sunlight. In short, Revo helps eliminate glare in the snow, reduces eye fatigue, and improves contrast.
6. WHAT DOES A PHOTOCHROMIC LENS DO?
Photochromic lenses change shade depending on light conditions. They typically start with a light 20-30% shade and darken to 60-80% in strong sunlight. Photochromic glasses have different base tones, and their lenses darken based on their base tone. Photochromic lenses are perfect, for example, when you find yourself in varying environments with different lighting conditions.
7. CYLINDRICAL OR SPHERICAL LENS?
We use two different types of lenses in our goggles – cylindrical and spherical. What is the difference between the lenses?
A cylindrical lens is vertically flat and curved on the sides, giving it a low profile. We use this design to create a vintage/retro look on our goggles. Most goggles with cylindrical lenses are designed to sit close to your face and provide a wide field of view.
A spherical lens has a rounded, bubble-like appearance that provides less distortion for the eye. The lens’s curve also reduces glare since there are practically no flat spots where light can hit to create glare. Another advantage of a spherical lens is the additional space created inside the goggles due to the rounded shape, helping to further reduce fog. Some spherical lenses even allow you to wear regular glasses underneath, depending on the size of your glasses.

8. UV400
UV400 protection blocks UV rays from reaching your eyes. All Appertiff goggles have UV400 protection that blocks 100% of UV rays. With UV400 protection, UV exposure to your eyes is eliminated, ensuring your eyes are well-protected and not exposed to risks while using our goggles. Using goggles and sunglasses with UV400 protection is strongly recommended by all eye specialists. It is the best protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays. If you’re wondering whether you’ll regret buying a pair of goggles with UV400 protection, the answer is no. You won’t regret protecting your vision and avoiding damage to your eyes.
9. CARE INSTRUCTIONS
PREVENT FOGGING Fog in your goggles can be really annoying and affect your visibility while riding. Here are some tips to prevent fogging and how it works:
- VENTILATION
All goggles are designed with ventilation systems that help keep the air circulating and prevent moisture from building up inside of the lens. When these vents are blocked, moisture can get trapped and cause fogging. Our goggles have vents on both the top and bottom. These should be kept clear to ensure good airflow. Make sure the vents on your goggles aren’t blocked by your beanie, helmet, or buff, and are free from snow and ice. - ANTI-FOG
All appertiff goggles feature an “anti-fog” coating on the inside of the lens. This coating helps reduce condensation and prevents moisture from forming fog inside your goggles. To maintain the anti-fog coating, avoid touching the inside of the lens as much as possible. If you need to clean the inside of the lens, use the soft microfiber cloth that comes with your goggles. Avoid rubbing too hard, as this can wear off the coating. Also, try to avoid wiping the inside when the lens is wet or snowy. Let the lens air-dry before gently cleaning it. - LET YOUR GOGGLES BREATHE
Moisture and fog can form when your goggles are wet and you put them on again in a cold or warm climate. So, when you’re not using your goggles, store them in a dry bag or case to avoid exposure to moisture from snow or water. After returning from the slopes, it’s important to let your goggles dry. The easiest way is to unpack them from the bag or wherever you’ve stored them and leave them out so they can breathe freely.
AVOID SCRATCHES
Scratches on your goggles can be very annoying and can impair visibility, making the goggles quickly unusable. Here’s how you can prevent scratches:
- CLEAN PROPERLY
Dirt, oil from your face, or snowflakes can stick to the goggles and create small scratches if you wipe them with a rough material or improper method. Always use the microfiber cloth that comes with your goggles to clean them. Microfiber is soft and gentle on the lens, helping to remove dirt without causing scratches. Make sure not to use clothes, paper, or other rough materials, as these can be too harsh and may cause scratches on the inside or outside of the lens. When cleaning the goggles, we recommend starting in the center of the lens and working your way outward towards the edges. This ensures that the dirt is wiped outward, minimizing the risk of scratches in the middle of your field of vision. - STORAGE
Storing your goggles without protection exposes them to external impacts and scratches. When you’re not using your ski goggles, store them in the hard case that comes with your goggles or in a bag. A hard case provides extra protection and prevents the goggles from being pressed or crushed. If you don’t have a hard case, you can use the cloth bag, which at least protects the lenses from dirt and scratches.
EXTEND THE LIFESPAN
Ski goggles are an investment, and by taking proper care of them, you can extend their lifespan and keep them in good condition for many seasons.
- CLEAN THOROUGHLY
Dirt, sweat, and oil products from your skin can accumulate on the lenses, which can impair visibility and potentially damage the lenses if not removed regularly. Gently rinse the lens with lukewarm water and avoid using harsh chemicals or cleaning agents, as these can damage the anti-fog coating or the lens surface. Shake off the water from the lens and let it air-dry before carefully wiping with a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining water and dirt. - REPLACE YOUR LENS WHEN NEEDED
If the lenses are scratched, cracked, or if the anti-fog coating has worn off, it will significantly impact your visibility. All of our models allow you to replace the lenses. If you need help finding the right lens for your goggles, you can contact us HERE. Our goggles feature different systems for lens replacement depending on the model.
